Below you'll find a list of commonly asked questions. If you have a question not answered below, please don't hesitate to reach out via our Contact Us page.
Is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) the same as Schizophrenia?
No. While they are in the same class of personality disorders, one of the main reasons "multiple personality disorder" was reclassified into BPD, DID, Schizophrenia, and the multiple variations therein was to demonstrate that every personality disorder cannot and should not be treated the same way.
I think I know someone with a personality disorder. Am I in any danger?
Unfortunately we cannot answer this question definitively, because everyone is unique. Some people have alters that are just like anyone else, and they want to be treated as such. While it is incredibly rare, though, sometimes people with personality disorders do pose a threat to either themselves or the people around them.
We are not a therapist or psychiatrist of any kind, but speaking from experience, we would recommend talking to that system first (if you are comfortable with doing so), and seeking a professional opinion is always a good option (if the system is comfortable with doing so).
I've seen movies and TV shows that portray people with personality disorders. How accurate are they?
We have never seen a movie or TV show that accurately represents personality disorders like DID. For the most part, that's probably because most people who deal with personality disorders aren't much different than people who don't, and as such, they wouldn't make for interesting movies.
