Devil’s Eye

Hilo, HI, USA
March 2017

If fate should lead to the Devil’s door,
Pray heed this warning, I implore,
Linger not on beguiling eyes,
or lose your soul to the charmer’s lie.

Aloe comes in many shapes, sizes, color, and thorn-lengths, but each is beautiful in its own way. The spikes lining the leaves of this variety of aloe serve a couple purposes: 1) they defend the plant from would-be predators who seek out aloe for the juices they store inside, and 2) the thorns snag leaves and other litter carried on the wind, and as they eventually fall to the ground below the plant, the little breaks down into nutrition for the aloe.
