Grandmother Papaya

Kealakekua, HI, USA
February 2018

“As a child,” my mother tells,
“You’d pick up rocks and sticks and shells,
And when you brought them all to me,
You claimed they came from the papaya tree.”

Homelessness is a massive issue both in America and around the world, and sadly, it’s not one many people are willing to address. Regardless of where we’ve met them, we have given the same advice to every homeless person we’ve ever spoken with: get to Hawaii. There you can sleep under the stars 365 days a year, you can protect the ocean and land as your job, and thanks in part to the papaya tree, you will never go hungry again.
The homeless are people, too, and they are just as deserving of our respect as any homeowner.
